Baptisms
A Thanksgiving for the Birth or Adoption of a Child
As soon as convenient after the birth of a child, or after receiving a child by adoption, the parents, with other members of the family, should come to the church to be welcomed by the congregation and to give thanks to God. It is desirable that this take place at a Sunday service. Please contact the parish office for additional information about this pastoral service.
Holy Baptism for Infants and Young Children
“I want what’s best for my child.” We all want what is best for our children. As parents, we constantly make decisions for our children, making the right choice for them. Whenever we make these decisions we do so because we are clear what we want for our child.
Seeking Holy Baptism for your son or daughter is the most important decision you can make for them. Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s body the Church. It begins that process of transformation and fullness of life that our Lord desires us to experience. God’s faithfulness toward us makes baptism possible and desirable as we find our lives being drawn to participate in God’s own life of reconciling love. Once baptized, always baptized; as the Prayer Book says, “The bond which God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble.”
What next?
1. Parents seeking baptism for a child contact the parish office to set an appointment to meet with the priest for an initial consultation.
2. Secondly, parents (and godparents or sponsors, if they are able) are invited to a baptismal preparation session. This session is usually with other families preparing for baptism and is about 90 minutes in length.
3. On the day of the baptism, plan to be at the church at least thirty minutes before the Liturgy (this includes the godparents).
Days for Baptism
The Book of Common Prayer encourages baptisms on the following days:
All Saints’ Day (November 1) or the Sunday following
The Baptism of Our Lord
The Great Vigil of Easter
The Day of Pentecost
The Bishop’s Visitation
St. Mary’s Day (August 15) or the Sunday following is also an appropriate day for baptism in the parish.
Holy Baptism for Adults and Older Children
Increasingly we see more adults and older children seeking baptism. The process for baptismal preparation is done over several months; this process is known as the catechumenate. This period of training and instruction in Christian understandings about God, human relationships, and the meaning of life, culminates in the Sacrament of Christian Initiation. Call the parish office to make an appointment with the priest to discuss this process.

Weddings
God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
--I John 4:7-16
Christian marriage is an extraordinary gift of God, in which a couple is called to live in the saving grace of Christ, enriched, guided and sustained by the Holy Spirit, in communion with the community of the Church. Whether you intend to be married, or seek the blessing of your civil marriage, we invite you deeper into the life of Christ and the support for your marriage. The following information is an overview of our requirements and policies, all of which are offered by the Church not as tests or hurdles, but as pastoral support for those seeking Christian marriage within the Episcopal Community of St. Mary's. If you have any additional questions, please call the church office at 860-649-4583.

Funerals
St. Mary’s stands ready to offer comfort and the consolation of faith to those who have lost a loved one. A centerpiece of this is the funeral service, rites contained in The Book of Common Prayer.
The funeral home selected by the family will contact St. Mary’s to arrange for the funeral service to be held here. After confirming that a priest is available to conduct the service, our administrative staff will schedule the service and arrange a time for the family and the clergy to meet. It is preferable to hold the service at a time when members of the congregation will be able to be present.
The priest will meet with you to plan the service, such as readings and hymns.
Receptions – Families often choose to hold a reception at St. Mary’s following the service. Our parish administrator can provide information about this.
Memorial Garden – St. Mary’s has a Memorial Garden for the burial of cremated remains. The policy and regulations governing the use of the Memorial Garden provides important details regarding this designated area of the church property.
Flowers – Families may arrange to have a florist deliver arrangements to the church and/or floral arrangements may be brought from the funeral home if the visiting hours were held there. Families are encouraged to designate donations in lieu of flowers to St. Mary’s Book of Remembrance or a favorite charity as a lasting tribute to a loved one.
Memorials – Families may want to make a gift of a specific item or create an endowed account at St. Mary’s to honor a loved one. A complete list of memorial gifts is available from our office and may be chosen in consultation with the rector.
Fees – The funeral home has information about any fees associated with the funeral service at St. Mary’s and will discuss these with the family.
